AN OPEN LETTER TO JIGAWA STATE GOVERNOR: A CALL FOR INCLUSION OF SPECIAL NEED PERSONS.

August, 2020

With due respect, Sir. I hereby write this short open letter over the recent news that Jigawa State government is going to sponsor 60 science students to study medicine abroad.

JIGAWA STATE GOVERNOR

The idea is good, but, it's not good enough since the state government under your administration has never sponsor SPECIAL NEED persons (comprising of BLIND, DEAF, CRIPPLED, and others) to study abroad. We have our reason for not studying science courses.

There are our brothers with special needs in secondary schools that are performing exceptionally. The state has a number of special need persons with NCE, Diploma, HND as well as Degree which just began.

Sir, no development loving state will abandon SPECIAL NEED persons in it's state as they are strongly needed in the society to eliminate some national problems and to ensure inclusion.

We are legal citizen of the state too. We should not be abandoned for the sake of justice. We know how well you are doing in states education sector, but we should be given Special treatment for the sake of equity and inclusion. It's unfortunate that we have no one to stand for us in the state to speak out on our needs.

Disability law was also passed in the national level and some states already started putting it into practice as the case of Zamfara, Cross-river, Kano and other states. We are hoping that you will emulate this excellent job by these state governments.

Special need students in our universities, colleges and Polytechnics need to also be given Special scholarship to meet their needs.

In conclusion, I call on the state government under your administration to put SPECIAL NEED persons education nailed on top of it's agenda in education sector and their needs in ministry of women affairs and social development. They should also be considered when sponsoring students abroad.

Thank you.

Abubakar Umar GBS.
